IN REVIEW - K.FLAY - MONO

K.Flay has returned with her fifth studio album, ‘ MONO’. The album’s title is inspired by K.Flay’s recent and very sudden on set of an extremely rare hearing condition called SSNHL (Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss) and Labrynthitis. The condition has left the musician and singer-songwriter completely deaf in her right ear.

The first track on the album deals with this head-on. ‘Are You Serious?’ explains exactly what happened, with clever use of sound to reflect the confusion and difficulties faced by K.Flay as she talks about how it feels to be suddenly faced with a brand new way of living and the reality of the condition.

As an experienced singer-songwriter, K.Flay uses all of her creativity and skillful lyricism on this album. Almost ten years since the release of her debut record back in 2014, K.Flay has managed to create an album that feels fresh and exciting.

‘The Punisher’, is one of my personal favourites; the beat throughout is on point, but more importantly, for me at least, is the way that K.Flay manages to connect on a human level, highlighting the reality that a lot of the battles we face in life are actually manifested in our own minds and projected by us on to others in a search for someone to blame for how we feel. Switch up the way you think, and things become a lot clearer. That’s my takeaway from the song.

‘Bar Soap’ is another standout track with its heavy drums and distorted guitar-laden hook, which is incredibly infectious. ‘MONO’ feels very much like a modern rock album infused with elements of pop, electronica, and rap thrown in for good measure. Whether you want emotional, slower tracks like ‘Hustler’ or something upbeat and catchy like ‘Spaghetti (feat. Kid sistr)’, there really is something here for you.

Honestly, there is so much to choose from. K.Flay has used humour and straight talking to create an open, honest, cards on the table album that is well worth including in your collection. This is a piece of work created by an incredibly talented and accomplished musician who has overcome real, life-changing adversity to come out stronger than ever. MONO is available from September 15th; head over to https://linktr.ee/officialkflay for more info.
